Online Economic Profile Trend Data Update - Unemployment Rate

All public access REMPLAN economic profiles have now been updated with the latest area-specific unemployment rates. These estimates are sourced from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations' (DEEWR) Small Area Labour Markets (SALM) datasets.   SALM data incorporates three primary datasets:
  1. Centrelink data on people in receipt of Newstart or Youth Allowance (Other), by postcode (not including people in receipt of the Community Development Employment Projects Participant Supplement)
  2. ABS Labour Force Survey data at the ABS Labour Force Region level
  3. 2006 Census of Population and Housing labour force data at the Statistical Local Area level.
The estimates presented have been smoothed by DEEWR using a four-quarter average to minimise the variability inherent in the estimates at the Statistical Local Area level.
DEEWR releases SALM estimates on a quarterly basis; the latest data is for June 2012, with September quarter data scheduled for release in December 2012.   Public access REMPLAN economic profiles are updated as new data is released from agencies such as DEEWR and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
To access unemployment rate data via the economic profiles select the 'Trends' tab towards the top tight of the screen, then select 'Unemployment' from the sub-menu.  Click on the image below to view a live example:

Promote Your Economy to Audiences in China

The relationship between Australia and China and has grown considerably over the years. Both countries are actively engaged economically, culturally and politically.  Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 21 December 1972 and APEC, the East Asia Summit and the G20 are important current forums for dialogue and engagement.
Today, China is Australia's largest trading partner and has one of the largest foreign reserves in the world.   Corporations and government agencies in Australia make use of this financial capital to invest in infrastructure, and to develop energy and mineral exports to meet China's hunger for the resources that underpin its ongoing economic development.
The strength of the trade relationship between Australia and China is clearly reflected in the economic structure of resource rich regions such as the Pilbara in Western Australia (map).

Regional Economic Profiles

The RDA Committee has commissioned REMPLAN to prepare economic profiles for each Local Government Association and the Northern and Southern Sub-region.

The profiles provide a snapshot of key industries that help propel our region, as well as changes to our population, employment by industry sector, labour force profile, and an industry sector analysis by output and value-added activities.
Electronic copies of the profile will be distributed to Councils soon. If you are not a Council but would like to receive a copy, please email rda.loddonmallee@rdv.vic.gov.au

New Interface

The REMPLAN online economic profiles have been our first foray into public access products. As a company of economists, demographers and software developers this raised some new challenges for us.
With REMPLAN Economy software our aim has been to deliver detailed data, flexibility in terms to being able to drill into topics of specific interest, as well as value-added resources such as economic impact modelling.  This level of detail and flexibility has however come with the need to provide on-site training, detailed help files and phone and email support.

Impact Modelling with REMPLAN

One of the most frequent ways that REMPLAN is applied is to model the direct and flow-on impacts on a change in a local economy.  Examples include: 'the construction of a new building', 'the expansion of a local business' and 'implications for local businesses of a change to government policy.   Within the REMPLAN “impacts’ module the flow-on industrial and consumption effects are automatically calculated from a direct change to the local economy.
Behind the scenes REMPLAN modelling automatically calculates the multiple rounds of flow-on effects in terms of output, employment, wages & salaries, value-added and Gross regional Product (GRP).  Based on some recent feedback from a Brisbane based client we thought it would be informative to graphically illustrate how these multiple flow on effects actually work.

Data Updates

All datasets are updated at least annually in order to provide the user with up-to-date and current data. These updated files do not overwrite previous versions, allowing for benchmarking and trend analysis over time. This will be beneficial for current subscribers when the 2011 Census update is released.
Significant data updates are scheduled for the New Year including:
  • National Accounts data – Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
  • Regional Tourism Profiles – Tourism Research Australia (TRA)
  • 2011 Census of Population and Housing – Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
The team at REMPLAN will begin updating this data as soon as it is released. Subscribers to REMPLAN will receive the updated datasets at no additional cost.
